  • More Information

Geo. W. Setley, with his “Horse Shoeing and Gen. Blacksmithing” shop, and Geo. Conner, with his “10th Ward Carriage Shop,” were among just a few of the early Williamsporters that made their living around horses.

Peter Herdic patented a horse-drawn carriage in 1881 that could carry up to eight passengers. A predecessor of the taxicab, "Herdic" cabs provided easier passenger entry and exit than other carriages with their low rear entrance.

"The Horse & Carriage Room" is next door to the "Fires & Fighters Suite" (Suite 202). Ironically, the history of these two rooms overlap:  Williamsport's "Great Fire of 1871" started in a stable owned by C.M. Baker on what was then called "Black Horse Alley" (now known as East Church Street), just east of Williamsport's downtown. These two rooms not only share stories, they share a cozy entrance/reading area, as well.

This traditional room, with its large windows and soft colors, provide a very comfortable atmosphere. The private toilet/shower room is brightly lit as well and features a rain shower head and specially-crafted sink basin.

The original charm and character of this historical building adds to the beauty of Room 201. "The Horse & Carriage Room" features one of the building's delicately-ornate vaults, which was used back in the early days of the Old City Hall. Now a closet for our guests, this safe is as decorative as it is functional.
